Legends of Slots

Legends of Slots sounds like one thing and plays like another. Underneath the loud colours it's a reflex-and-pattern arcade game: reels of little symbols spin, and your job is to tap and line things up at the right moment. Timing is the whole game. Get into a rhythm and it feels great; mash buttons and you'll fall apart.

Controls are refreshingly simple. One thumb does most of the work, and there's a satisfying click-and-stop feel when you nail a lineup. The game slowly layers in new symbol types and short themed stages, so the pattern you learned in the first hour isn't the pattern you need later. That progression kept me opening it on the bus for a week straight.

What I liked most is that it respects short sessions. A round takes a minute, you can put it down, and nothing nags you to come back. The animations are a touch too busy at times, but once you learn to read the board it fades into the background.
